Faucet & Sink Installation and Repair FAQ
A disposal that is completely dead is usually a power issue. First check that it is plugged in and that the breaker has not tripped, then press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit. If it still will not run after resetting, the internal motor or switch may have failed and the unit needs service or replacement.
Look on the underside of the disposal for a small red reset button and press it firmly until it stays in. If the unit tripped from an overload or jam, this often restores power. If it trips again right away, there is likely a jam or electrical fault that needs to be cleared before the disposal will run safely.
A humming sound with no grinding means the motor has power but the impeller is jammed, often by a bone, fibrous food, or a utensil. Turn the disposal off before doing anything else. A jam left running can burn out the motor, so it is best to have it cleared promptly. Our technicians can free the jam and check the unit for damage.
A leak from the bottom of the unit usually means the internal seals have failed, which is not repairable and signals the disposal is near the end of its life. Leaks from the top or side connections are often just loose fittings or a worn gasket and can be repaired. We will pinpoint the source and recommend repair or replacement accordingly.
Jams, tripped resets, and loose connections are usually repairable. Persistent leaks from the body, a motor that only hums or fails to start after resetting, or a unit more than about ten years old generally point to replacement, which is often more cost-effective than repeated repairs. We will walk you through both options before deciding.
Avoid grease, fats, and oils, fibrous foods like celery and onion skins, starchy items like pasta and potato peels, coffee grounds, eggshells, and anything that is not food. These are the most common causes of jams and clogs. Running cold water before, during, and after use helps keep the unit and your drain clear.
