How to Remove Hard Water Stains in Bathrooms and Kitchens

Hard water stains occur when mineral deposits in your water build up on surfaces within your home. These stains also attract soap and shampoo, contributing to soap scum around your bathroom. Fortunately, you can clean most hard water around your bathroom and kitchen with some common household supplies.

Cleaning Most Hard Water Off Surfaces 

You can typically remove hard water stains in your bathroom and kitchen by using a commercial cleaner, or by following some DIY methods that incorporate mild acids such as white vinegar or lemon juice with a gentle abrasive like baking soda. 

Prepare Your Cleaning Solution

Combine one part distilled white vinegar or lemon juice with one part distilled water in a spray bottle or container.

Apply the Solution

Spray the solution on the hard water stains until the area is saturated. Let the solution rest for at least 30 minutes. 

Scrub the Area

After 30 minutes have passed, scrub the affected area with a sponge, towel, or toothbrush to break apart the mineral deposits. For tougher stains, create a baking soda paste by mixing one part water with three parts baking soda. Apply the paste to the stain and scrub in circular motions until the area is clean. 

Rinse and Dry

Once the stains have been broken up or removed, rinse the area with distilled water and dry with a paper towel or cloth. 

Preventing Hard Water Stains

One of the easiest ways to prevent hard water stains is by incorporating a diluted vinegar solution into your regular cleaning routines. You can either create your own DIY solution, or find a store bought all-purpose cleaner that includes vinegar as one of its primary ingredients. Depending on the severity of the hard water stains, it may be worth installing a water softener in your home to not only cut back your cleaning, but also prolong the life of your pipes and water-based appliances such as dishwashers or washing machines.
